Mid-Century Modern Revival
At long last our mid-century modern, new construction home is finally done!!!! We originally bought the house and lot in March of 2012. Our plan was to renovate the existing structure and add an additional 2200 SF, but the city of Sandy Springs had other ideas so this became our first new construction project.
We finished way behind our original schedule but the final product is nothing short of FABULOUS! It’s a massive 4000 SF U shaped, modern style ranch, built around a central courtyard (read our post for ideas on what to do with the courtyard). All of the finishes have clean, modern lines but still feel warm and inviting.
We used 42″ dark bamboo cabinets in the kitchen and decked it out with everything a serious cook would need, including 36″, 5 burner pro style range, pot filler, industrial faucet and farm sink, and these are just a few of the kitchen features. The great room includes a modern linear fireplace with glass tile surround and built-in cabinets and shelves with plenty of options for placing a large screen TV. And there’s even a den off the great room that would make a great office or kids’ playroom. The dining room is big enough to host huge family gatherings. The kitchen, great room and dining room all look out to the courtyard.
We installed a frosted glass garage door so even when the door is closed there is plenty of light in the garage. Off the garage entrance is a giant laundry room with the same bamboo cabinets found in the kitchen, half bath and a 12′ long custom built mud bench with plenty of storage for shoes, coats, bags, sporting equipment – you name it!
There are four 12′ x 14′ bedrooms with custom closets down one side of the hallway and windows looking out to the courtyard on the other side. There is a Jack & Jill bath between each of the 2 sets of bedrooms with double vanities and a separate room for the bathtub and toilet.
At the end of the hallway is a massive master suite with windows looking out to the back of the property, triangular shaped transom windows and a 16′ slider giving access to the courtyard. The master bath has dual floating vanities, a free standing soaker tub, an oversized shower, separate water closet and very large custom closet.
The house is situated on a beautiful .41 acre wooded lot, so not only is there a courtyard for private gatherings but there’s also yard space at the back of the lot for kids to play or maybe a pool. There’s even a large shed in the back corner that will provide tons of storage. The house has a side entry driveway and garage and an additional parking pad in the front. The entire lot has been nicely landscaped.
All in all we think it turned out beautiful and unique. We are very proud of it and we think anyone that calls this house home will be equally proud.
